Have you ever wondered what stops you from reading books by a certain author? Indeed, what makes you turn away from a writer whose books you don't want to own and will never be able to read even a single line of? Perhaps “to hate” is a rather strong verb in this case, and perhaps not exactly correct, but I use it in a more generic sense, more like a strong antipathy towards the writer , to be considered an indigestible person for various reasons. It is rather difficult to dislike classical authors , unless you really hated yourself at school - certainly not through any fault of your own, but of teachers who failed to make them appreciate you. I couldn't stand The Betrothed and consequently Manzoni, I couldn't stand The Divine Comedy and consequently Dante, but after school I read Manzoni's novel and bought a nice 3-volume edition of the Divine .
What certain teachers were unable to do, time has done. Writers of today... not to be read But an author of our era? Why not choose it ? Why, indeed, choose not to read his works ? Every now and then I discover contemporary authors whose books they have published, for one reason or another, I decide not to read. Indeed, several years ago I bought a book-document that had become Special Datafamous, waiting to read it when I felt like it. Recently I saw what the author wrote on social media and the first thing I did was put his book up for sale on Ebay, happy I hadn't read it. How to lose readers before being read: some authors should reflect on the issue, but I believe that from this point of view we are all in the same boat. We cannot be liked by everyone or be appreciated by everyone. I thus wanted to think about the reasons that make me not choose a writer , that push me to avoid reading his works .
For me there are only 3 reasons, and perhaps they are not even few. 1 – The author writes stories that we don't like to read I often say this: no reader should read what is not within their literary tastes. Reading is personal and tastes are sacred. Reading involves a double expense: in money to buy the book and in time to read it. If you don't like science fiction, don't read my novel – if I were to finish it and publish it, of course. I'm not offended, on the contrary: I appreciate coherent people. There are contemporary authors that I am not tempted to read, like Niccolò Ammaniti, Elena Ferrante and Stefano Benni, for example. Not for any particular reason, but when I read the titles of their stories they simply don't appeal to me. I have only read one novel by Alessandro d'Avenia ( What Hell is Not ), because it was received as a gift with an order, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
